October has been a super creative month. Richard Mills normally looks for abstract landscapes in cement to photograph. In Lakkos he got very creative, and was stretching his imagination to many materials and effects he had not tried before.
Andre came to Heraklion for a stay of three weeks. As he was itching to get started making a mural early, he got to work on his second day. From the first one requests from locals for more grew and grew. He has since completed four around Heraklion. One is a huge one in a children.s play ground.
Janet is a self declared, 'Old lady'. Well apart from numbers this is far from the truth. In the short time she stayed here she, and some helpers created a community mural.
Paints supplied by the Municipality of Heraklion. As part of the 2019 Street Art Festival. On Friday, October 4 at 8pm, the Social Space Da (15, Ntentidakidon St.) will have the honor to host Janet Braun-Reinitz, an artist, painter and human rights activist. She started out as a Freedom Rider, trying to break the racial segregation of blacks and whites in the US in the 1960s, and has been active in feminist and social struggles ever since.
Since the 1980s, she has made dozens of large-scale murals in many parts of the world, illustrating injustice and oppression, but also equality and struggle, for social empowerment and emancipation. In a discussion / self-presentation, she will tell us about her artistic work, feminism, the fight against racism, and how all of these are and remain inseparable issues in life. For the last three summers Ann and John have returned to Lakkos. They live in New York city, but are looking to retired in Greece. They keep coming back to Heraklion, as so far it keeps hitting their top favorite city list. This trip Mathew talked them into making a Mural in Ano Asites. At first they were not very keen to spend much time in the village. Pretty much as soon as they got up there they changed their minds and stayed a week. Their mural contains lots of key elements from the village.
Visual artist John Palmer stayed for two month. In his time here he made three murals. Two in Heraklion city and one in Ano Asites village. He also assisted in the creation of a large community mural. John was here for so long, that he made many valuable contacts with locals, and international artists.
