New Yorker Marcia Clark, Australian Trisha Lambi and from Brussels, Lie Dirkx. We did a tour of the new murals and then had a party on the Lakkos square.
It is not all art making in Lakkos. Between guests many small and big works happen to the old houses. The front of the main house which is Ottoman had not been touched in many years. Most of the original rendering was removed and the stones exposed. Plus a pergola was built to keep the courtyard cool in summer.
Visual artists Wendy DesChene and Jeff Schmuki came to Crete to study pollinating moths and get involved with the Lakkos project. While here they painted a large mural and had a small solo exhibition.
www.facebook.com/events/422423671568694/ Joshua came to Crete to research parts of its long history. While here he had a solo exhibition and left a large wall mural. Joshua is planning to return in winter to make a full show from his gathered research.
joshuaunikel.com/ www.facebook.com/events/1805083226196715/ Lakkos is not a big area and making a dramatic change is pretty easy. Giannikou street was once very beautiful but for the last few decades, as the old people left it became abandoned. Summer 2018 is welcoming visual artists to add their individual touches to the narrow street.
Lisa Solovieva from London came to stay at the residency last summer. She has sent photos of her work which was a reaction to the mass tourism she saw on the north coast of Crete. (This tourism is avoidable if you go south).
Claudine is a French visual artist. She had never done a street mural, but got excited about the concept and ended up leaving two.
Rosemary came to Lakkos during the Heraklion municipalities street art festival. We broke away from Lakkos and made paintings in the equally lovely area of Agia Triada.
www.enrapturingentertainment.com/ During the month of July New York artists Sharyn Finnegan offered free drawing lessons form the residency. At the end of her stay we had a group exhibition in the main house.
We had a very busy June with some fantastic artists who painted murals in Lakkos. We presented all of the murals on the same night and finished with a party on Lakkos Platia. It was so much fun and the community loved the event. Thank you Sharyn Finnegans, Britta Stenmann, Ann Shostron and John Bowman.
Thank you to the Heraklion Municipality for supplying the paint, and Antje Larson for the photos. Dizi Alex is a Greek street artist from northern Greece. She wanted to do a painting in Lakkos and we were very happy to have her. The work is on the Lakkos square. We have been pushing her to make a website but as for now you can look her up on facebook under her tag name of Dizi Alex.
Melanie came to Crete to escape the cold winter in the UK and work on molds to be cast with bronze. We were very lucky as she wanted to make a piece and leave it here. She has for a long time had dreams of flying. Because of this she made a large sculptor of Icarus, which we hung in the local square.
www.melaniedeegan.com/ Candy and James came to Lakkos to develop their project about dealing with grief and death. Full artists details and project description in the facebook event page. Thank you Antje Larsen for photos. Thank you Heraklion Municipality for supplying the paint.

www.facebook.com/events/1837274949818763/ Photos by Antje Larson Elena has a big love for our island and has been here three times. This time she came with her ukulele, as well as art materials. She did lots of filming in her short stay. Soon we hope to have some photos of her ink drawings of Lakkos. Here are some links to films she made in and around Heraklion.

This trip we headed to the beaches in the south and stopped off at the ancient city of Gortyna. With us was Elena Duff, Angela Maasalu, Joey Gavin and Antonis Tsirikoudis. Also on the trip we went to Matala beach and an apple festival in the mountains.
Joey came to stay at the residency to write and record new music. At the end of his stay he put on a concert with local Odysseas Grammas. The event took place in the basement of Diartiriteo. The night started quietly but by the end of the show the venue was packed!
